General account on Forest Research Institute, Dehradun

  Forest Research Institute, Dehradun also known as F.R.I. is one of the leading premier research institute. F.R.I., Dehradun has its roots in the erstwhile Imperial Forest Research Institute established in 1906 to organise and lead forestry research in the country had celebrated 100 glorious years (1906-2006). 
Set in a lush green estate spread over 450 hectares, with the outer Himalaya forming its back drop, the institute's main building is an impressive edifice, marrying Greco-Roman and Colonial styles of architecture, with a plinth area of 2.5 equipped laboratories, library, herbarium, arboreta, printing press and experimental field areas for conducting forestry research, quite in keeping with the best of its kind anywhere in the world.
In 1988, FRI and its research centres were brought under the administrative umbrella of Indian Council of Forestry Research Education (ICFRE) under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India. Institute has six museums in its campus, Entomology, Pathology, Non Wood Forest Products, Silviculture and Timber museum.
The National Forest Library and Information Centre (NFLIC) is the richest in document collection on forestry and allied sciences in South and Southeast Asia. With the constitution of the Indian Council of Forestry research and Education (ICFRE) as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Govt. of India in the year 1986, then Central Library of FRI was upgraded to National Forest Library and Information Centre (NFLIC), the acquisition of books and subscription to journals increased manifold.
There are fourteen research divisions viz., Botany, Cellulose and Paper, Chemistry, Forest Pathology, Silviculture and Forest Management, Entomology, Engineering and services, Ecology, Climate Change and Forest Influence, Extension division, Forest Products, Forest informatics, Forest Soil and Land Reclamation,Genetics and Tree Propagation, Non Wood forest Products Division.
The Indian Forester is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research in forestry. It is one of the oldest forestry journals still in existence in the world. It was established in 1857 and is published by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. 
Forest Research Institute, Dehradun has also presented report on "Health status and age assessment of the trees of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
